Where do I buy Gasoline?

I buy the cheapest gas I could find.

Of course I do follow some rules so that it would be sulit.

One get it from a reputable source meaning there is a company, not the person selling literally by the gallon. Those placed in gallon containers. I don't buy from the big three (Petron, Shell, Caltex) I buy from the independent players the petrol that they have are just the same as the big three, so why spend more. In fact some of the big three when they have shortages, they buy from the independent players. Lets get something straight also. Gas from the big three are overpriced. Then they entice you with different kinds of promos to get gas from them, Whether it would be free softdrinks to ice cream to stuff that you really don't need. Not to mention the cost to advertise.

Two, get where it is nearest your place, or where its on your route to wherever you go. I get my gas which is a bit far from me but once a week or once in two weeks I have meetings in that area, so I take that opportunity to get cheap gas. Would you believe it is less 5 pesos per liter from the big three prices. So every time I gas up I save about 200 pesos (if I fill up with 40 liters). Now I even bought a gas container to fill up with their gas to save. the container was a 20 liter container costing me 600 pesos. with just 120 liters of gas I have recovered the cost of my container.

If I gas for 40 liters a week that would be 160 liters in a month multiply it to 5 pesos savings that would amount to 800 pesos. I can say that I use that money for other maintenance cost for the car, like change oil etc.

Yen Yen taiwan streetfood restaurant

After our check up in the hospital,we usually eat out afterwards as it take a long time to finish waiting for the doctor. We ended up in Yen yen restaurant which claims Taiwan street food. Before the check up I was browsing the net as I came upon a promo as they have turned 1 year old. They have a promo for the whole month of April its one pesos for your second bowl of noodles. I said great we will eat there after the check up.

When the check up was the done we were starving as it was already past 1 pm. We reached Yen Yen about 1:15 pm. We ordered two bowls of soup to avail of the promo. It is you pay 1 peso for the second bowl which is lower in price. So we got the same price different noodle soups. (Taiwan beef braised noodle soup and Taiwan beef and herb noodle soup both Php 220. (which i thinks is quite expensive for a bowl of noodles) We ordered also dumplings Php140 for 8 pieces
The braised beef was ok. It was like beef stew with noodles. As you can see in the photo the large chunk of carrot and the radish. Saving grace was the texture and quality of the noodles, as it was fresh and soft. You may cut it even if your did not have teeth at all. The herb soup was unsatisfactory as my wife kept getting soup from my bowl. The dumplings on the other hand was I think under cooked as it felt rubbery. Lets put it this way, it was harder then the noodles.

For me even if it had the promo for the noodles, I would rethink if I would eat there. I would eat there and tryout  other dishes. but for the noodles,I had better. Not sulit

really? soup for 220 pesos, the bowl is not even that big.

Ramen Bar

After a kids night out (I mean a night out that starts at 11 pm where there still a few people in the club) me and my wife were terribly hungry after waking up at around 1030 am. My wife was craving for some ramen. The nearest one was Ramen Bar in Eastwood. I gave her the authority to order whatever she likes. We have eaten here before and we were not that satisfied. It was just her hunger for ramen that made us come back.

She ordered the Rbs ramen which she does not even know what rbs means. I was still probably asleep that's why I gave her full control. She also ordered some rice bowl topping with some kind of beef. While ordering she asked if it had that special egg ( where the egg white was hard and the yolk soft) The waitress was explaining to her that it was not. It was just like boiled in soy or something like that manner.

So the order came, The first thing I noticed was when the waitress laid down the rice bowl she said that it was burning her hands. The first thing that came to my mind was OMG the food is microwaved. I freaking hate that. If you were to get cooked rice and put it in a bowl and place your beef on top it would not burn your hands unless there was a different heating source added to it. The beef was soso  and I just tasted a few and gave it back to wifey. The soup was better this time around. The egg was a failure. The noodles flew without flying colors. The pork was too fat.  I tried to salvage the whole thing by asking for some chili flakes. You know, the orange flakes I am used in a lot of japanese  restos to then this came. Red flakes that reminded me of fish food for the aquarium.  I placed a few, no taste, I threw a spoon full, no taste. I took a pinch and put directly to my mouth. Absolutely no taste. What the hell was that i just put in my mouth.

The so called chilli flakes
In the end we were full, that was the reason we were there in the first place.

Not sulit.

Mien San resto

I rarely have fave restaurants, but when i do every time I pass the place how i wish it was lunch time or dinner time. Mien San is a taiwanese resto. I have been eating there long before it was renovated. It is a nice place now, with modern interiors. Before you would think twice to eat there and wonder if they had good food. I was introduced by my brother to the place who is a foodie himself but have no time to tell or blog about it.

Mien san is located at granada st. valencia new manila in Quezon city.

I f you are a regular in a place you tend to order the same items. If I go there alone (the times when i was a product specialist out on the field) I usually order noodles, congee or rice toppings. Believe it or not the fried chicken here is good. If I am with a group this is what i order; yang chow fried rice, veggie dumplings, tofu with century egg and steam chicken with leeks. I personally love the steamed chicken with the leeks. It is like the white chicken rice and the condiment in white chicken already on top.

For me its sulit because taste is great that you could pay a bit more. The last meal bill is 600 pesos the order is yangchow, steamed chicken and sha long bao dumplings ( for my eldest son who loves it).  Served two adults and a 4 year old.

And for some advice come 30 minutes early for that coveted parking space.

Photo above is the yang chow and the steamed chicken. I mean partial yang chow, wife already hungry when the photo was taken.

Milk tea every where

Milk tea, milk tea, milk tea every where. So it seems that the bandwagon right now is milk tea. I have tasted those milk teas even when it was not yet present here in the Philippines. I tasted it in Singapore and also in Macao. For me they all tasted the same with just some variations from each other.

For being the sulit part, since I have tasted almost all of them, the one I choose is I Love Milk Tea. I usually go to the Timog branch. Pricing wise you get a large glass for an average price of 60 pesos and that's including the pearl/sinkers. In the Timog branch it is also a cafe and there is also food served in the branch which i personally like. You can get a whole plate of mojos, a club sandwich and also pasta and other lunch food. Price range was about 100 to 150 pesos. You can also have the bursting pearls which could be a lot of fun because it could be like a regular paintball bullet. You just use your straw as the barrel and the pearl as a exploding projectile.

I have tried other branches of I Love Milk Tea, apparently they don't offer the food menu but the milk teas are still there which are half price than most of the imported brands. I guess you have to pay more for the franchisee to pay for their franchise fee.

First Post

This is my first post. I was convinced by my friends to put a blog regarding practical and "sulit"  (nothing to do with sulit.com but will post about it some other time) finds in the city or where ever. They kept asking me for advise as to where do you get stuff for almost everything. As to where is the most sulit place to eat. Whether it is very cheap or the price is a bit high but super sulit. Where do you get your gasoline? I guess you know what I mean.

I tried looking for the definition of sulit in the web
most of the websites said no human translation found. One translation  which got it right was Optimal. This is the best translation I found. The worst said sulit (noun) a popular classified ads in the Philippines.
I would define it as the most bang for your buck. I guess its a new meaning coming from the original meaning of sulit

n. 1. explanation; 2. statement; 3. exam; test; 4. returning what was borrowed
copied from pinoydictionary.com
which is test or exam to check if the item is good or passed personal standards. The word sulit rarely used before, what i remember was the word pagsusulit. Used before in our filipino class as my teacher usually says. Mag aral mabuti at bukas ay meron tayong pagsusulit. ( study very well as we would have a test tomorrow)

Being practical is not just where you could get the best for your money but also repurposing things for everyday use. I will post the items that gave new use for items other than what it was intended to be. One good example would be I repurpose  a aerosol cap (cover of a spray paint can) in to a iphone desk mount. How much will you pay for a desk mount found at a power mac center 1500 - 2500 pesos. That is what I call sulit.
